Scope 3 is entered in the same monthly form as Scope 1 and 2, on the “Scope 3” tab. The platform covers 14 GHG Protocol categories, from purchased goods to franchises. In each category you choose what data you have, while category 3 is calculated automatically from Scope 1 and 2. Category 15 (investments) is not part of the GHG contour: a separate service is being prepared for it.
Step 1. Turn on Scope 3 for the year
Scope 3 is counted only for the years in which the organization's administrator has turned it on. Until then, the tab shows a message such as “Scope 3 is not included in 2025”. The administrator clicks “Turn on Scope 3 for 2025”, while employees see a prompt to contact the administrator. This does not affect Scope 1 and 2.
Bear in mind that once Scope 3 is turned on, closed facility years reopen, and closing them again will require Scope 3 data as well.
Step 2. Go through the month's categories
Each category is a separate row with the month's total and a switch in its header.
- If there was no such activity in the month, set the switch to “This month: none” — you do not even need to open the category.
- If there was, the category expands. Answer “What data do you have?” and fill in the fields for the chosen method. Emissions are calculated immediately, even before you save.
- If the category does not apply to the facility at all, click “Does not apply to us” and give a reason: “We have no such activity”, “The amount is too small” or “Other”. You can undo this with “Include again”.
- At the bottom of the tab is a single bar with a “Categories changed” counter and a “Save” button. All changed categories are saved together, and a category with a missing field stays open.
The calculation method is chosen separately in each category. A few examples:
| Category | Input methods |
|---|---|
| 1. Purchased goods and services | “By product mass”, “By purchase amount (USD)”, “Supplier data”, “Purchased water” |
| 2. Capital goods | “By mass”, “By purchase amount (USD)”, “Supplier data” |
| 4. Upstream transportation | “Freight”, “Third-party storage” |
| 5. Waste and wastewater | “Solid waste”, “Wastewater (metered)”, “Wastewater (from water intake)” |
| 6. Business travel | “Trips”, “Hotels” |
| 7. Employee commuting | “Commuting”, “Commuting by own car”, “Remote work” |
Purchase amounts are entered in US dollars. As a rule, supplier data is more accurate than a spend-based estimate, so if a supplier discloses its emissions, choose that method.
Category 3 is calculated automatically
The “Fuel and energy not in Scope 1 and 2” category covers the extraction and delivery of the fuel and energy you have already entered in Scope 1 and 2, as well as grid losses. You do not need to enter it manually. The “Automatically from Scope 1 and 2” block shows the proposal for the month, its status and its total, and the “Apply” button adds it to your records. If Scope 1 or 2 data changes later, the row is marked “Changed — apply”. The platform will ask you to remove any manual records that duplicate the automatic ones.
Why there is no category 15
Category 15 covers the financed emissions of banks and investors. They are calculated with the PCAF methodology, with attribution by asset class, and a separate PCAF contour is being prepared for this; it is currently marked “Soon”. In company analytics, the “PCAF · category 15” card is marked as coming soon as well. For the methodology, see PCAF: financed emissions of banks and investors.
Example: March at an office-based company
In March, the company bought stationery and services — category 1, method “By purchase amount (USD)”. Two employees flew on a business trip — category 6, method “Trips” — and two hotel nights were entered with the “Hotels” method. The platform prepared category 3 from the gas and electricity bills, so all that is left is to click “Apply”. The remaining categories are set to “This month: none”, while “Franchises” and “Use of sold products” are excluded with “Does not apply to us” and the reason “We have no such activity”. One click on “Save”, and March is done for Scope 3.
Frequently asked questions
What does “known part” mean in the totals?
The Scope 3 total for a period is complete only when every category is complete. Until then, the platform shows the known part with a note, and “Total” shows Scope 1 plus Scope 2 with the label “excluding Scope 3 — it is not complete yet”. Once Scope 3 is fully calculated, “Total” includes it and is labeled “including Scope 3”.
Do all 14 categories have to be filled in?
Each category must be either filled in, set to “none” for the month, or excluded with “Does not apply to us” and a reason. How to judge which categories are material for your organization is explained in Scope 3: the 15 emission categories.
Why does a category say “not calculated”?
No emission factor was found for the data entered. This is not zero: refine the data — for example, choose a different input method — or contact the administrator.
